$600K Bond For Country Club Hills Man Charged In Wife's Beating Death

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill. (STMW) -- A Country Club Hills man charged with murdering his wife in their south suburban home was ordered held on $600,000 bond during a hearing Wednesday.

Taft Hayden, 47, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Mary Hayden at the couple's home in the 4500 block of West 179th Street, according to a release from Country Club Hills police.

He first called 911 at 8:17 a.m. Monday and said his wife had fallen, according to police. Because authorities had previously responded to "numerous" calls of domestic violence at the home, police were sent to the home along with paramedics.

Fire department crews found Mary Hayden, 42, dead at the home, police said. She had suffered blunt force trauma to her face and head, according to officials.

Authorities found the scene suspicious and arrested her husband at the home, police said. Taft Hayden was ordered held on $600,000 bond at a hearing Wednesday.

An autopsy found the woman died of head and brain injuries, blunt force trauma from an assault, and ruled her death a homicide, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

William Brown, who oversees the city's police and fire departments, described Hayden's death as an "isolated incident."

Mayor Dwight Welch said Monday afternoon that the killing resulted from a domestic dispute in which they "had an altercation and the rest is what it is."

"With the family involved, it's really sad. I feel really bad about it," Welch said.
