Indiana Drivers Warned: Stay Off Roads

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Drivers in Northwest Indiana were being told on Monday to stay off country roads, as many of them remain impassable.

Interstate 80-94 between Munster and Michigan City was closed but reopened Monday afternoon, but Interstate 65 from US 30 in Merrillville and Lafayette remains closed.

While Indiana Department of Transportation crews are working to clear the snow, drifting snow and subzero temperatures are slowing the effort.

Roads that may be passable have narrow lanes due to drifting snow or may be extremely icy.

"This is a dangerous situation and all are advised to stay home until roadways can be safely cleared," INDOT said on its Facebook page.

"Unfortunately, not everyone is heeding the warning. Drivers have been caught going around barricades on closed interstates, like I-94 and I-65. This is extremely dangerous."
