Suspect In Two Rapes Charged In Two More Attacks

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man being held without bond for allegedly carjacking and raping two women in December has been charged in connection with two additional attacks that same week on the North Side.

James Whiteside, 30, sexually assaulted a woman in the Rogers Park neighborhood before he robbed her of her money and car, Chicago Police said Friday. Two days later in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood, he attempted to steal a woman's car while her child was in the back seat.

While armed with a knife on Dec. 26, Whiteside sexually assaulted a woman, then stole her money and vehicle on in the 7000 block of North Clark, police said.

Two days later, he showed a knife and stole a 29-year-old woman's money, then tried to steal her car while her child was in a car seat in the 1200 block of North Milwaukee, police said.

Whiteside, of the 600 block of West Deming Place, faces seven felony charges stemming from the two incidents, police said.

For the Dec. 26 attack, Whiteside is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, armed robbery, and vehicular hijacking, police said.

For the Dec. 28 incident, he is charged with vehicular invastion, attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated battery to a child younger than 13 and armed robbery.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday, police said. His defense attorney has said Whiteside is homeless, and suffers from schizophrenia.

The last attack was the fourth for which Whiteside faces felony charges of sexual assault and vehicular hijacking, police said.

On Dec. 31, he was ordered held without bond in connection with two Dec. 27 sexual assaults, police said. He faces eight felony charges stemming from those assaults.

One attack was against an elderly woman in a West Side parking lot near the Orange Line station, police said. A separate attack hours earlier involved a woman in the Montclare neighborhood.

Whiteside is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault against a senior, aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated kidnapping with a weapon, kidnapping, aggravated armed robbery, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon.

In one incident on Dec. 27, a 69-year-old woman was getting into her vehicle in a secure parking lot in the 4600 block of West 59th Street after getting off the Orange Line. Whiteside brandished a handgun and forced her into the vehicle, then sexually assaulted her and stole her money, cell phone and ATM card, police said.

Afterward, police said he drove the victim to various locations and made withdrawals from her bank account before abandoning her and the vehicle on the West Side.

Earlier that same day, police said, Whiteside sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman in the 3100 block of North Harlem.
