College Student, 19, Shot Over Cell Phone During Robbery On Southwest Side

(CBS) – A 19-year-old City Colleges student is fighting for his life, after being shot in the head Thursday during a robbery in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

Victim Kevin Baker is a freshman at Harold Washington College. Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said that Baker was walking with a female friend on the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue when at least two attackers jumped out of a dark-colored van and demanded their cell phones.

Baker and his friend complied, but as the robbers walked away, one turned and shot Baker in the head.  The attackers then jumped back into the van and sped off.

The woman was unable to supply police with a detailed description. The incident happened around 4:15 p.m.

The victim's cousin, Arlene Allen, said Baker often posted on his Facebook page that he was proud to be getting an education and staying off the streets.

"But it doesn't matter, because no matter what you do," Allen said.

Baker was in critical condition late Thursday at Advocate Christ Hospital, in Oak Lawn.
