Kirk: More Than $18 Million Available To Cops To Fight Street Gangs

(CBS) — Senator Mark Kirk says there is now more than $18 million available to help police in Chicago – and other areas to fight street gangs.

“I would think that Eliot Ness would have died and gone to heaven if he had gotten $18.5 million to take on Capone,” said Kirk.

Senator Mark Kirk says “it’s not a lock” that the $18.5 million to combat gangs will all go to Chicago – to help Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy and his work.

“My office will be helping Garry’s team to write the grant proposals to make sure it has all the magic words that the Justice Department needs to see so that we prevail.

“Because what good is it unless it really helps out CPD, in my view.”

The $18 million is to be used to combat gangs of “national significance.”
