Speed Cameras To Issue Tickets Near Prosser Academy

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Drivers will officially be ticketed beginning Saturday if they're caught speeding by traffic cameras near Prosser Career Academy High School in the Northwest Side Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

The three cameras--located at 5509 W. Fullerton Ave, 5446 W. Fullerton Ave. and 5440 W. Grand Ave--are placed in a "Children's Safety Zone," or a city-designated area one-eighth of a mile from a school or park, according to a release from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

Enforcement hours in school safety zones are in effect between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, the release said.

From 7 am. to 4 p.m., when children are present, the speed limit is set to 20 mph. If no children are present from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., drivers can travel up to 30 mph., the department said.

Also on Saturday, new speed cameras were installed near Union Park at 125 N. Ogden Ave on the Near West Side, Schaefer Park at 2427 N. Clybourn Ave. in the North Side Lincoln Park neighborhood and Rosenblum Park at 7436 S. Jeffery Blvd. in the South Side South Shore neighborhood, the department said.

The speed limit will be 30 mph around parks seven days a week, depending on each park's hours, which are typically between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., the release said.

Tickets from these cameras will be issued starting March 7.

Drivers will be fined $35 for traveling 6 to 10 mph over the speed limit in a safety zone and $100 for speeds 11 mph or higher, the release said.

Revenue from the program will be invested in "safety initiatives," like after-school, anti-violence and jobs programs; more crossing guards and police officers, and other traffic safety improvements, the release said.
