Cops Search For Gunman In Deadly Rogers Park Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police were searching for a masked gunman who shot four teenagers outside a McDonald's in Rogers Park on Wednesday, killing one of them.

Seventeen-year-old Markeyo Carr was shot in the head outside the McDonald's in the 6700 block of North Clark Street.

Police said a masked gunman approached Carr and three other teens, shot them, and fled the scene on foot.

Carr died in the bloody attack. Three other teens were wounded, including a 14-year-old girl who attends Senn High School, about a mile away. Two 18-year-old males also were wounded in the attack.

Police sources said two of the other victims had gang ties, but the girl was an innocent victim with no gang ties whatsoever.

Cleo Smith, a classmate of the girl who was shot, said the attack will take a toll on her family, and everyone at the school.

"I just think about the life that she could have had, and how it could affect her family," he said. "We were just thinking about who would do something like that, and how much disrespect it takes someone to have to do something to a girl like that."

Police said the 14-year-old was shot multiple times in the chest, back, and leg.

Another classmate, Mia Wilson, said she was devastated by the shooting.

"I didn't know what to think," she said. "We were acquaintances. We were kind of close. … I'm very worried.

Police said the gunman exchanged angry words with at least one of the victims shortly before coming back to the parking lot and opening fire.

The girl initially was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, but later was transferred to Lurie Children's Hospital.
