Contractor Critically Injured In Fire At Park Ridge Home

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (STMW) -- A man who was working as a contractor at a northwest suburban Park Ridge home was critically injured Saturday morning after a fire broke out in the building.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the single-family residence about 9:45 a.m. in the 100 block of South Chester Avenue, said Park Ridge Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Sorensen. The fire started in the enclosed porch in the back of the house.

The home was vacant at the time of the fire, but two men were laying flooring in preparation for tenants to move in later this month, Sorensen said.

While one man was treated at the scene for minor injuries, the other man was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Sorensen said. He suffered from smoke inhalation and burns to his face and neck.

A firefighter cut his hand while battling the fire but was not hospitalized, Sorensen said.

The fire was extinguished about 10:20 a.m. Sorensen estimated between $75,000 and $100,000 worth of damage to the home.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
