Mother Killed, Daughter Wounded In Back Of The Yards Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 46-year-old woman was killed, and her 25-year-old daughter was critically wounded, when they were shot during an apparent domestic dispute in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

CBS 2's Susanna Song reports Theresa Spearman was trying to break up an argument between her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend around midnight in the 5400 block of South Laflin Street.

Spearman's fiancé, Danny Darling, said she had been planning to give him the best birthday present of all next month: her hand in marriage. Now, instead of spending the money he had saved on their wedding, he'll be spending it on Spearman's funeral.

Darling said not long after Spearman tried to intervene in the dispute between her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend, he heard Spearman and her two daughters run down a hallway and into a bedroom, before shutting the door behind them.

That's when the 25-year-old daughter's boyfriend kicked down the bedroom door, shot Spearman and the 25-year-old daughter, and pistol-whipped the other daughter.

Spearman was shot in the stomach and upper back. She died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Her 25-year-old daughter was shot several times in the torso, and was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. Her other daughter was taken to St. Bernard Hospital. Her condition was not available late Friday morning.

Darling said he has no idea what started the fight in the first place.

Police said the boyfriend fled the scene and was not in custody.
