Alderman Proposes New Approach To Rat Control

(CBS) -- Though they're out of sight, we know they're there.

As temperatures start to rise, Ward 2 Ald. Bob Fioretti believes we'll see more of them than ever -- rats, that is.

"It's on the lakefront to the Far West Side. It 's throughout all of our communities," Fioretti tells CBS 2's Chris Martinez. "You'd think we are dealing with a third-world country."

He predicts an explosion in Chicago's rat population this spring. He's pushing a new a new strategy: a liquid sterilization bait that leaves rats unable to reproduce -- a product currently being employed in New York.

Mayor Emanuel says the city has put more money into rat control, but  he's open-minded to new ideas.
