Two Men Charged After Off-Duty Cop Shoots Home Invader

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men have been charged after an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot one of three men who tried to break into his home Friday afternoon in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood.

Marquise Peppers, 18, who allegedly pointed a gun at the officer, was ordered held without bond Sunday. His alleged accomplice, 21-year-old Willie Boswell, was held on $1 million bond.

The officer was at home in the 9600 block of South Princeton Avenue about noon when Boswell, Peppers, and another man tried to break in, police said.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the 33-year-old officer was with his 7-year-old daughter when he heard someone trying to pry open his front door.

The officer sent his daughter to her bedroom and called 911 before going outside and finding two men in front of his house, as well as the van driven by Boswell, authorities said.

One man ran northbound on Princeton Avenue, and Peppers ran toward the officer on his way into the van and pointed a gun at the off-duty officer, who shot Peppers in his left shoulder, authorities said.

The van then led police on a chase before crashing near 89th Street and Yale Avenue, where Boswell and Peppers were arrested, police said.

Peppers, of the 1200 block of West 73rd Street, was shot in the back and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, police said. An update on his condition was not available Sunday afternoon.

Boswell, of the 1200 block of West 73rd Street, was charged with one count each of aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle, attempted residential burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was also charged with an issuance of a warrant and an out-of -state warrant.

Peppers has been charged with one count each of attempted residential burglary, aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon, criminal trespass to vehicle and possession of burglary tools.
