Duo Who Shot At Cops After Bank Robbery Arrested In Missouri

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Police in Missouri have apprehended a man and woman who robbed a northwest Indiana bank at gunpoint Saturday morning, then fired shots at police as they fled, the FBI said.

Jeremiah Ellis, 28; and Ashley Patterson, 24, both of East Chicago, Ind., were arrested Friday in connection with a "takeover style" robbery at First Merchant Bank at, 4740 Indianapolis Blvd. in East Chicago, the FBI said.

After the robbery, an officer began pursuing the suspect's vehicle and one of the suspects got out and began firing at the officer. The suspect then got back into the SUV and a second officer gave chase, police said.

One of the suspects then leaned out of the vehicle and began firing at the pursuing officers, authorities said.

Police lost sight of the vehicle as it entered Hammond near 149th and Walnut streets. Police recovered shell casings from what appeared to be an automatic weapon at both sites.

No one was injured in the exchange. Becker said officers did not return fire because the chase took place in a residential neighborhood.

The chase began shortly after the couple entered First Merchants Bank around 11 a.m. The man jumped the counter to the teller cage while the woman ordered customers and workers to the floor.

Becker said more than 10 people were inside the bank. No one was injured.

Details regarding how the couple was apprehended in Missouri were not immediately available.
