Vandals Slash Tires Of 19 Vehicles In Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. (STMW) -- Some north suburban residents woke up Tuesday to find vandals had slashed the tires on their vehicles which had been parked on the street overnight.

One or more suspects slashed the tires on about 19 vehicles between late Monday and early Tuesday, targeting those parked within a couple of blocks on Evanston's southeast side, according to police reports.

"Most of the incidents were discovered when people came out in the morning time," Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrot said.

Most of the 20 vehicles damaged were in the 600 and 500 blocks of Judson Avenue, according to police. Other incidents happened in the 400 block of Keeney Street and the 700 block of Hinman Avenue.

Not all of the vehicles lining those streets were targeted, Parrott said. Of the vehicles damaged, some saw all four tires slashed, while others had one or two tires damaged.

"We haven't had anything like this recently, and it appears to be one individual or several," Parrott said.

Police did not receive any calls of suspicious persons in the area at the time, and have no description of possible suspects, he said.

Detectives are looking to see if any buildings in the mostly residential area have surveillance cameras, Parrott said. Officers are also concentrating patrols in the area.

"This appears to be a random act and not any sort of ongoing pattern," he said.
