Motorola Shows Off New Merchandise Mart HQ

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Motorola Mobility's new world headquarters is in Chicago's Merchandise Mart is part of a new wave of high tech employees for the city, attracting talented young workers.

CBS 2's Derrick Blakley took the tour and reports there's pinball, foosball and video games in the lunchroom.

Motorola Mobility's new 600,000 square foot headquarters is designed to attract talented young workers.

"We wanted to have a place where we could continually attract and retain the top technology employees," said Motorola Mobility CEO Rick Osterloh.

And increasingly, top, young tech grads want to work and live in the city.

"I think young people that are graduating from some of the surrounding universities, the thought of working in a large tech corporation right here in Chicago is very appealing," said Motorola Mobility employee Kristine Mulford.

It is the same reason Google is expanding its presence here, bringing 500 employees to Fulton Market.

"I want to make Chicago the destination of talent, of patents, of ideas," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

And it helps to have amenities like an 18th floor Merchandise Mart roof deck, believed to be the city's biggest, with power, WiFi, and stunning city views.

"It's very attractive. It's very California. It's something we really wanted to have here," said Motorola Mobility project manager Jeff Krohl.

Motorola Mobility's move from its old Libertyville headquarters 2,000 new employees to the city. The mart's location, with its own L stop and a protected bike line right outside, is another big draw for its younger workers.
