Family Of Slain Officer Settles Lawsuit Against Shop That Sold Murder Weapon

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The family of a murdered Chicago policeman has reached a settlement in its lawsuit against a Mississippi gun shop.

The parents of officer Thomas Wortham sued Ed's Pawn Shop & Salvage Yard, saying it sold the gun that killed their son to a straw buyer, WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports.

Under a settlement, the gun shop agreed to videotape all handgun sales and keep the videos on file for three years.

It also promises to notify federal and local authorities of any multiple purchases within a 30-day period.

The lawsuit alleged that the sale of the gun that killed Wortham should have raised red flags because the straw buyer paid $1,500 in cash for the three guns he bought.

Officer Wortham, just back from a second tour of duty in Iraq, was shot to death four years ago in front of his parents' home in the Chatham neighborhood when four men tried to steal his new motorcycle.

His mother said her son survived the battlefields of Iraq but couldn't survive the streets of his hometown.
