2 Teen Girls Shot, One Fatally, In Back Of The Yards

(CBS) – A 14-year-old girl was fatally shot Monday afternoon in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and a social-media feud may have played a role in the killing.

Endia Martin, a Tilden High School student, was with another teen girl in the 900 block of West Garfield Avenue when they were hit by gunfire around 4:30 p.m.

Martin was taken to Comer's Children Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The other girl was in stable condition at St. Bernard's Hospital.

Kent Kennedy, Martin's stepfather, said Endia was coming home from school when a student from a different school approached her.

"They had words, and she gunned our daughter down, in the back -- for what?" Kennedy tells CBS 2. "For what reason?"

It appears the incident may have been triggered by insults exchanged on a social-media website.

"This feud on social media needs to stop," says community activist Andrew Holmes. "It gets ugly, and eventually, sometimes, as you see, one has lost their life."

A source says a person of interest is in police custody.
