Tigers Beat White Sox 4-3

CHICAGO (AP) — Bryan Holaday bunted home Austin Jackson with two out in the ninth to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Jackson lined a long drive to right off Ronald Belisario and reached third when the ball was misplayed for an error by Dayan Viciedo. Jackson scored on Holaday's surprise bunt down the first base line.

Right-hander Joba Chamberlain (1-1) worked one inning of relief and Joe Nathan earned his fifth save.

Belisario (1-3) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Holaday, a late lineup addition, went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

White Sox starter Jose Quintana struck out a season-high 10, but had no decision for the third time this season, departing after six innings with the game tied 3-all.

Justin Verlander worked seven innings in his 176th quality start since 2006.

The White Sox scored three runs in the third. Adam Eaton's double to left scored Marcus Semien, Gordon Beckham singled home Eaton, and Adam Dunn drove in Beckham with a two-out double to right.

Victor Martinez got one back for the Tigers in the fourth with a one-out single down the third base line that scored Ian Kinsler.

Ramirez opened the fourth with a bunt single to tie Paul Konerko's 2002 franchise record with 39 hits in April, but was caught stealing on a throw from catcher Holaday to shortstop Danny Worth.

Quintana struggled in the sixth as the Tigers collected four straight two-out hits and scored twice. Torri Hunter's RBI single scored Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson's base hit to left drove in Victor Martinez to tie it 3-3.

Quintana struck out Nick Castellanos to close his final inning. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits and walked none and was replaced by right-hander Jake Petricka.

Alejandro De Aza tripled with one out in the seventh but was stranded when Verlander struck out Semien and Eaton.

Verlander didn't return for the eighth. He gave up three earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out four.

Tigers catcher Nick Avila was a late scratch with lower back spasms. He was replaced about 2½ hours prior to the game by Holaday.

NOTES: Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said RHP Anibal Sanchez's finger "looked good" and he is scheduled to do informal throwing Wednesday. Sanchez was placed on the disabled list April 27 with a laceration on his right middle finger, and that "rawness kind of seems to have gone away," Ausmus said. "It's just a matter now of building up the skin on the end of that finger where it can take the friction of a baseball coming off of it again." . The Tigers entered Tuesday after two days off having played just 21 games - the fewest in baseball. . No makeup date has been announced for Sunday's rainout at Minnesota. . White Sox left-hander Chris Sale, sidelined with a left flexor strain, remains unlikely to pitch into this weekend. . RHP Hector Noesi (0-1, 11.74) is scheduled to make his first start of 2014 on Wednesday and could work around five innings.
