High School Basketball Player Hospitalized After Collapse During Game

(CBS) -- A 16-year-old Chicago high school student is hospitalized in critical condition after collapsing at an AAU basketball tournament game on Saturday that was being held at Riverside Brookfield High School, according to Riverside Police.

The player, Jermaine Cullum, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center where he is in intensive care. Cullum is a student at Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School in Chicago.

Witnesses told police that the player had just completed a layup when he collapsed on the court and stopped breathing. The boy was in full cardiac arrest when police arrived on the scene and a doctor and nurse where administering aid to the player.

"There is no question that the immediate response of the off-duty doctor and nurse played a crucial role in the fact that this young man is still alive," said Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel in a press release. "My officers arrived within two minutes of the initial 911 call and CPR had already begun. When paramedics arrived, they further treated the victim both on the court and in the back of the ambulance before transporting him to Loyola Hospital.
