(CBS) White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu has been named the American League Player of the Month and the AL Rookie of the Month, MLB announced today.
The 27-year-old Abreu hit .270 with eight doubles, a triple, 10 homers, 32 RBIs and 20 runs in March/April. He led the majors in homers, RBIs and total bases in that span and ranked fifth in slugging percentage.
Abreu also set major league rookie records for homers, RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases through April.
Abreu is the second player in history to be named a player of the month in his first month in the majors. Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was the first when he accomplished in it June 2013.
