(CBS) — Federal investigators are combing records at Hines Veterans Hospital in Maywood and Senator Mark Kirk says they’re there for a good reason.
Kirk says he’s asked for a complete investigation by the VA inspector General’s office.
“I am going to ensure that as a ranking Republican member on the Veterans’ Appropriations subcommittee that they have enough resources to make sure that there is no secret waiting list that could harm healthcare for our veterans,” said Kirk.
Senator Kirk says he’s heard reports he believes credible of a treatment waiting list at Hines and he wants to see if veterans are getting treatment they need when they need it and he also wants a similar probe at veterans facilities in North Chicago and Marion, Illinois.
The VA responded in a letter to CBS 2 that accusations of waiting lists at Hines come from an employee who mistook a quality improvement record for a treatment waiting list.
Senator Kirk said he wants to reduce the one year period it takes from when a wounded veteran to returns home, until disability payments begin.
