CHICAGO (CBS) — A company that bills itself the Amazon of Alcohol is starting up a liquor delivery service in Chicago.
Drizly has launched a mobile app (iPhone and Android) that allows users to purchase a variety of beer, wine, spirits and mixers.
The app will add a delivery fee–for our order it was $5–and a tip for the delivery person.
Minimum order is $20.
Because we care about the consumer here at CBS Chicago, we took the app for a little spin.
We decided to order a few six packs of beer.
The selection, while not extensive, was certainly more than adequate, considering we are sitting in the relative comfort of the office right now.
Drizly partners with liquor stores in your delivery area, so selections might vary.
Our offices are located at the corner of Washington and Dearborn.
We ordered a six-pack of Lagunitas Daytime Ale ($10.79) and Brooklyn Lager ($10.49).
With delivery fee, tip and taxes our bill totaled $29.57.
But wait! Something cool: Enter the promo code WELCOMECHI and Drizly will knock $10 bucks off!
That’s a free six-pack!
But wait! The liquor store near our office doesn’t open until 3 p.m.
So, we couldn’t place our order, just yet.
(Actually, it’s OK, we weren’t planning on drinking until after the early evening newscasts were over.)
Drizly promises to deliver your packaged goods within 20 to 40 minutes.
We will wait until 3 p.m. to place our order and let you know how it goes.
UPDATE: We placed our order at 3:10 p.m.
One of the really nice features is order tracking.
Once the order is placed, the app opens a map that shows the progress of your delivery driver. It even provides the driver’s name and gives you the option to call the store if there is a problem
Eugene arrived with our two cold six packs at the security desk lobby right around 3:30.
Drizly currently delivers to the South Loop, Loop, West Loop, River North, Gold Coast, Streeterville, Wrigleyville, Lakeview, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park and Bucktown.
Drizly’s delivery drivers authenticate and validate IDs.
