CHICAGO (STMW) – A Chicago Police officer shot and killed a man threatening police with a knife Saturday night in Englewood, police said.

Officers responded to an emergency assistance call from the Chicago Fire Department about 11:25 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Racine Avenue after paramedics were confronted by a man wielding a knife, according to a statement from police.

Myers, of the 11300 block of South Indiana Avenue, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 12:08 a.m. Sunday, a spokesman for the medical examiner’s office said.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the the man ran to the passenger side of the squad car, where an officer was sitting with the window open. He kept waving the knife around and the officers told him to the drop the knife, Camden said.

Camden said a 10-inch knife was recovered from the scene.

No one else was injured, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is investigating along with Area South detectives.
