Friends, Family Mourn Man Killed In Elgin Crash

(CBS) -- It was the wrong place at the wrong time as the simple act of paying a bill would be the last for a Kane County man.

35-year-old Miguel Tellez was hit and killed Tuesday night in Elgin. Investigators say the person who hit Tellez was on the run from police.

CBS 2's Marissa Bailey reports two candles have been placed just feet from where 35-year-old Miguel Tellez died.

Investigators say Tellez was t-boned Tuesday night by 34-year-old Steven Luellen of Elgin. Luellen was on the run from police blew a stop sign, slamming into the Carpentersville man's car.

"He was a lovely guy," said Lucy Arellano, a friend of the family.

Arellano says Miguel wasn't married and didn't have any children, but his mother was his world.

"This is hard for her. He is like her baby," said Arellano.

Arellano says Tellez was a regular at Trinity United Methodist Church and even played guitar during services.

And as police continue their investigation, a family continues to grieve.

"Sometimes we don't understand why, but God knows what he's doing," said Arellano.

Elgin police say they're familiar with the suspect and he's run from police in the past. Police say charges against him are still pending.
