Chicago Man Missing In Lake Michigan Off Indiana

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search of the surface of Lake Michigan for a Chicago man missing in the waters off northwestern Indiana.

Indiana conservation officers say an underwater search using sonar was continuing after the Coast Guard halted its surface search Sunday.

They say 29-year-old Ron Wood Jr. disappeared during a rescue Saturday evening in waters near Michigan City.

Officers say Wood and others aboard his 33-foot boat jumped in the lake to rescue two members of the group who had been swimming, but then the boat drifted away and the lone person still aboard couldn't start it. Another boater and a Coast Guard crew were able to rescue everyone but Wood, who couldn't be found.

Conservation officers and others searched for Wood until dark Saturday night.

The accident is not related to the capsizing of a boat that was headed to Chicago's Burnham Harbor Saturday night.
