Lockport Man Killed In Homer Township Crash

HOMER TOWNSHIP (STMW) -- A 23-year-old southwest suburban Lockport man died Saturday when his car burst into fire after crashing into a ComEd pole on Bell Road in Homer Township, Will County sheriff's police said.

Andrew Mazza died of injuries suffered in the crash, according to the county coroner's office.

Mazza was speeding in a turbocharged Dodge Neon southbound on Bell Road when he lost control about 6:30 p.m., south of 143rd Street and about a quarter-mile north of Martindale Lane, police spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Hoffmeyer said the car rolled over several times before hitting the pole.

Several people, including a sheriff's police officer, saw the crash and stopped to help but could not get near the car, Hoffmeyer said.

"He was going at a very high rate of speed," she said. "(The car) broke the pole; the vehicle immediately ignited."

Mazza was wearing his seat belt, Hoffmeyer said.
