Two Chicago Police Officers Shot After Traffic Stop
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two officers became the target of gunfire during a traffic stop late Friday night in Washington Heights. Two others were also wounded in the shooting.
CBS 2's Courtney Gousman reports the two officers were taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn along the man police say shot at the officers. Both officers have been released from the hospital.
Police say that around 11:30 Friday night, two officers pulled over a vehicle at the corner of 93rd and Wallace. As they approached, a male passenger opened fire and wounded the officers.
A 38-year-old officer with 12 years of experience was shot in the knee. His 31-year-old partner, a six year police veteran, was saved when his police vest took the bullet.
"Our officers did return fire, ended up striking the male offender multiple times and the female offender, one time in the left shoulder," said Chicago Police Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger.
The passenger, Malik Shabazz, 29, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder. Shabazz is still hospitalized after being wounded in the shooting.
The driver was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and was released into police custody.
