Kaymer Protects Lead On Tough Day At Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Martin Kaymer has shot a 2-over 72 on a brutal day at the U.S. Open, good enough to maintain a five-stroke lead heading to the final round.

After making only one bogey the first two days, Kaymer had five bogeys on his card in the third round Saturday. An eagle at par-5 fifth hole helped to limit the damage, and the 29-year-old German birdied the final hole to remain comfortably ahead of his closest challengers, Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton.

Kaymer is at 8-under 202.

Fowler and Compton were the only players to break par, both shooting 3-under 67. That puts Fowler in the final group with Kaymer on Sunday.

Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson are six shots back. Brandt Snedeker is the only other player under par at 209.
