Bar Employee Punches Boss; Injures Cops After Escaping Handcuffs

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An employee of a popular west suburban Naperville bar remained in jail Thursday night, after he allegedly punched his manager and then slightly injured two Naperville police officers, after escaping from the handcuffs in which they had secured him.

Israel Alcantar-Abrego, 24, of Aurora, remains in DuPage County Jail in Wheaton on $50,000 bail. He faces trial on charges of aggravated battery of a peace officer, resisting or obstructing a police officer and battery, according to police and DuPage County Circuit Court records.

Additionally, officials of the U.S. Department of Justice's Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have placed a "no bond" hold on Alcantar-Abrego. He reportedly faces deportation proceedings.

Alcantar-Abrego was arrested about 12:01 a.m. Sunday, after allegedly causing a disturbance at Potter's Place, at 29 W. Jefferson Ave.

Naperville police Sgt. Bill Davis said officers who were already working in the downtown area at that hour were sent to the rear of the restaurant, to investigate a report of a fight there. They found the bar manager and Alcantar-Abrego outside the building.

The manager told police Alcantar-Abrego was one of his employees, and had arrived at work drunk, Davis wrote Thursday in an email. Alcantar-Abrego "was asked to leave the business several times, (but) became quarrelsome and refused" to do so, Davis said.

"Alcantar-Abrego then punched the manager in the face with (his) closed fist several times, before he was subdued by other staff," Davis said. Police then placed him under arrest and put him on the back seat of a squad car, for transport to the police station.

"While en route to the police department, he was able to remove his handcuffs," Davis said of Alcantar-Abrego. "The officers had to stop and re-secure the handcuffs" on him, he said.

Alcantar-Abrego allegedly resisted being handcuffed again "and struggled with the officers," Davis said. "As a result, one officer received a minor scratch on his arm, and a police detention officer received a minor injury to his right knee."

Davis added neither officer required hospitalization or other medical treatment.

Alcantar-Abrego's police photograph depicted him wearing a red T-shirt embossed with the Potter's Place logo. It also showed bruising to his forehead, and what appeared to be a scar running from his left eyebrow to the bottom of his left ear.

It was not immediately clear whether he had sustained the wounds while fighting with fellow bar employees or police, or if they were older injuries.

An examination of court documents indicated Alcantar-Abrego has no criminal record in DuPage, Kane and Will counties. A preliminary court hearing has been set for Tuesday in the case.
