Catalytic Converter Thieves Lead Police On Chase On South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least two people were in custody Friday morning, after leading police on a chase when officers responded to reports of someone stealing the catalytic converter from a car in the Chatham neighborhood.

Police said the chase started when officers responded to reports of someone stealing a catalytic converter from a car near 79th Street and Eberhart Avenue.

Officers pursued to suspects in a green car, and at one point they crashed into two or three other vehicles near 79th and Vernon. Catalytic converters were found in the suspects' car.

Police said one suspect fled on foot onto the Dan Ryan Expressway, running south in the northbound lanes, before he was arrested near the 79th Street CTA Red Line station.

A woman driving a red SUV also was arrested at 73rd and Wentworth, after she apparently tried to pick up one of the suspects in her vehicle. It was unclear if the second suspect in the catalytic converter theft was in custody.
