CHICAGO (STMW) — Several streets near the South Loop will be closed over the weekend–some through next week–for this year’s Lollapalooza music festival.
Streets bordering Grant Park will be blocked off to traffic for at least three days, from Friday through Sunday, during the sold out festival, according to a statement from the Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Columbus Drive is closed from Monroe Street to Roosevelt Road through August 4, the OEMC said. Congress Parkway and the Circle is blocked from Michigan Avenue to Columbus.
Both Balbo Avenue and Jackson Boulevard are closed from Michigan Avenue to Lake Shore Drive. Additionally, Balbo will be closed until Aug. 7 from Columbus to Lake Shore Drive, the OEMC said. Jackson will also be inaccessible between the same streets until Aug. 6.
CTA bus nos. 2, 6, 10, J14, 26, 7, 126, 143 and 147 will be rerouted because of the street closures. Check http://www.transitchicago.com for detours information.
Service will be increased for CTA trains and buses through festival days, according to the CTA. Trains will operate for longer on the Blue, Brown, Green, Orange and Red lines until at least 10 p.m. over the weekend. There will be more frequent service on Saturday and Sunday, the CTA said.
The weekend is expected to be warm after a partially mild week. Temperatures will reach a high around 78 degrees during all three festival days, according to the National Weather Service. A slight chance of thunderstorms could dampen Friday and Saturday, the weather service said, which forecast a 30 to 40 percent chance of showers for those days.
For extreme weather situations, blue and white signs will be posted around the park to direct people to weather shelters. The Grant Park North and South shelter sites can be accessed through the vehicle entrance on Michigan Avenue, and the East Monroe Street site can be accessed through Columbus Drive.
