Listen: Kevin Harvick Excited For Upcoming Chase For Sprint Cup

(CBS) Days after securing himself the seventh spot in the 16-driver field for NASCAR's revamped Chase for the Sprint Cup, Kevin Harvick expressed an appreciation for the new system that puts a premium on winning like never before and, once the Chase starts, will feature a new round-by-round advancement format.

"It's interesting," Harvick said on 670 The Score in an interview with Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes. "It's going to be a lot more intense as we get toward the last 10 weeks … You have to be on top of it.

"You definitely try things you wouldn't try over the last 10 weeks (of the regular season/pre-Chase) just because once you've won, you know you're in and you need to win more."

Harvick's currently 11th in the points standings, but with a win this season already, all he has to do is attempt to quality in the next five races to make the Chase -- which is a mere formality.

"You have to have that consistency to go along with a fast car because there will be guys who are fast and consistent who knock off those top-five finishes every week," Harvick said. "You have to figure out how to do that."

The Sprint Cup series comes to Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 14.
