CHICAGO (STMW) – A man died Wednesday night after he was pulled from the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit responded to a call of a person in the water about 6:20 p.m. in the 3700 block of South Pulaski Road, police said.

Jaime Cantellao, 21, was pulled from the water about 7:10 p.m., according to fire officials and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Fire Media Affairs said he was seen jumping in to the canal.

Cantellao, of the 5400 block of South Keeler, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

Police said his death was an apparent suicide.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
