Cool August Weather Dampens Summer Plans

(CBS) -- There's certainly a chill in the air making it feel a lot more like fall than summer and for kids getting ready to head back to school, it's not exactly the end to the summer vacation they were hoping for.

CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports that at Centennial Park in Oak Lawn there were only a handful of folks out when normally there would be hundreds.

This is not the summer weather high school kids Milton Velastegui and Lillian Chico were hoping for.

"I expected it to be more sunny days," Milton said.

"It's been like cold this summer and it's not even like hot," said Lillian. "It doesn't even feel like summer. It's like spring and fall."

She says the cool, damp weather ruined a lot of her big summer plans.

"I wanted to go to a bunch of concerts, pools and beaches, and not much now because since it has been like raining," said Lillian.

Milton Velastegui says he's also missed out.

"Lots of parties, people out, swimming, playing ball at the park," he said.

Tuesday, Milton and his friends were just about the only ones enjoying the park. No kids at the playground or on the baseball field, and that's not it.

On a normal August day, the Oak Lawn Athletic Center would normally be packed with about 300 people. Instead, it was closed Tuesday because of the cooler temperatures and rain, along with several other pools in the Chicago area. And this wasn't the first time.

"We've lost a lot of night swim and we did have a challenging time trying to get our swim lessons in, which we did finally complete last night," said Mary Crout of the Oak Lawn Park District. "A few weeks from now it will be like this every day."

The aquatic center will close for the season on Aug. 24. As for the students, most of them head back to school next week.
