Body Found Under Burning Vehicle In Auburn-Gresham

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The body of a 46-year-old Chicago woman was found under a burning vehicle Friday morning in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood.

Police responded to the 8600 block of South Honore Street around 7:45 p.m., after a burned body was found outside a vehicle on fire.

The victim has been identified as 46-year-old Sherita Smith, who worked for the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind.

Family members were stunned.

Seron Smith, the victim's brother, says his sibling was raising three children, including one son she promised to drive off to college days from now.

"We were in line yesterday, buying TV and things for my nephew to go off to school," an emotional Smith said. "I love my sister dearly."

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death, but a cause of death has not yet been determined.

Area South Detectives were investigating.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said he was offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
