29-Year-Old Des Plaines Council Member Dies

(CBS) -- The city and city council of Des Plaines is reeling from the unexpected death of a 29-year-old city council member, reports WBBM's John Cody.

Des Plaines flags are flying at half-staff to honor the death of 29-year-old Joanna Sojka.

"Over the last five years, the city of Des Plaines has looked for a new direction and Joanna played a very important part of that direction over the last two years," said Des Plaines Mayor Matt Bogusz.

Des Plaines Mayor Matthew Bogusz indicated Sojka was more interested in deeds than discussion.

"Joanna was a stickler for the details. Specifically she dug in to our latest waste hauling contract and helped negotiate a great contract for the taxpayers of Des Plaines," said Bogusz.

At the Monday council meeting, city officials heard first she'd taken ill and then learned life support had been withdrawn following rapid onset of stroke-like symptoms afflicting Sojka.
