Several Injured After Car Crashes Into North Suburban Mariano's

(CBS) -- An elderly motorist lost control of her car and rammed a supermarket in north suburban Northfield, injuring four people.

A Northfield Police spokesperson said the woman at the wheel was a Northfield resident in her 80s. The woman told personnel at the Northfield Mariano's that she hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

The car leaped forward, and hit the front wall of the store, at 1820 Willow Rd., going by one eyewitness estimate at better than 45 miles an hour. The intruding car knocked down a smoothie bar employee inside, who was unhurt but wailed from the shock and surprise.

An eyewitness said, had the car struck three feet to the left, it would have landed in the smoothie bar's customer area.

Northfield Fire Department paramedics transported the injured to local hospitals. All of the injuries were minor. The store was closed because the accident left live wiring damaged and exposed.

The accident remains under investigation.
