Driver Ejected From Car, Struck By Semi In Tri-State Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was critically injured late Wednesday night, when he was thrown from his car, and struck by a semi, in a crash on the Tri-State Tollway.

Illinois State Police said a Toyota Camry heading south on Interstate 294 struck a construction vehicle parked on the side of the road near Kedzie around 10:50 p.m.

The driver of the Camry was ejected from the vehicle, onto the roadway, where he was hit by a semi-trailer truck, police said.

In trying to stop to avoid hitting the man, the semi's brakes locked up, and the truck was rear-ended by another semi.

The driver who was ejected from the vehicle was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was in critical condition.

One of the truck drivers also suffered minor injuries, police said.

The southbound lanes of the Tri-State were closed for more than five hours after the crash, but reopened before the morning rush.
