Illinois To Start Accepting Medical Marijuana Applications From Patients, Businesses

(CBS) -- In September and October, the state will take applications from patients whose last names begin with the letters A through L. Then, in November and December, those whose names go from M through Z, can apply.

Bob Morgan heads Illinois' four-year pilot project to allow approved candidates smoke pot to ease their symptoms.

"Currently, it is anyone over the age of 18. But, beginning January 1 of 2015, this will include children. Those individuals in Illinois who are suffering from a very specific list of debilitating medical conditions: things such as cancer, HIV/Aids, multiple sclerosis, other types of conditions," he said.

Starting next week, the state will take applications from businesses that want to dispense medical marijuana. Morgan says Illinois' been in touch with other states that have had similar programs for years.

"We're able to pull the best practices from all those states."
