Off-Duty Harvey Police Officer Critically Injured In Robbery Near MSI

(CBS) -- An off-duty Harvey police officer is in critical condition after he was beaten during a robbery early Sunday near the Museum of Science and Industry.

The 43-year-old officer was sitting in a car about 2:45 a.m. near the museum in the 5900 block of South Lake Shore Drive when a group of males walked up, police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic said.

Harvey Spokesman Sean Howard has identified the officer as Derick Moore. Howard says Moore suffered head injuries when he was beaten.

The officer got out of the car and the group of people beat him, causing injuries to his face and head, police said. They took an unknown amount of money and property and ran away, police said.

He was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition had stabilized Sunday morning, Sedevic said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with our officer this morning," Harvey city spokesman Sean Howard said in an email. "We remain hopeful for his speedy recovery."

Howard says Officer Moore was still in ICU Sunday morning.

He says Moore has been married for five years and has been with the Harvey Police for five years.

Howard says Moore and his wife have four children.
