Man Shot By Chicago Police, Officer Struck By Car On Near West Side

(CBS) -- An undercover Chicago Police officer is recovering after he was hit by a car during an arrest, forcing other officers to open fire on the suspect Saturday evening on the Near West Side.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports the officer was sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

All of this took place last night just after 10 p.m. on West Lake Street near Oakley Boulevard.

At the time law enforcement says they were investigating drug deals. Police were looking into one man in car and tried to arrest him.

They say he refused and drove off striking the officer's vehicle and knocking that cop to the ground. While on the ground the driver is accused of trying to run the officer over.

Police say that's when another officer shot the driver, who was hit at least once.

"The force of the collision knocks the passenger officer to the ground. He actually sustained what we believe is a broken back," said Pat Camden with the Fraternal Order Of Police.

The driver is in serious condition. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
