Businesses Pitch In To Fix Driveway Of Wheelchair-Bound Four Year Old

(CBS) -- It will soon be smoother sailing for a Naperville four-year-old who uses a wheelchair to get around, reports WBBM's Lisa Fielding.

A badly cracked driveway at the Casteen house in Naperville posed challenges for Ella, who suffers from spinal muscular atrophy.

"The driveway was in such a condition that she was having trouble and she was getting caught, the wheels on her wheelchair were getting caught. The family was concerned about the safety of her on the driveway," said Ed Maher, with the Operating Engineers Local 150 Union.

Maher made some calls to get the family some help.

"There was equipment and manpower needed to take out the old driveway. There was a business that stepped up to accept the old concrete and recycle it for no charge," he said.

Maher says with the help of Baumgartner Construction, the Concrete Contractors Association of Greater Chicago and Prairie Materials the new driveway by the end of the week.
