Girl Falls Into Hole During Gym Class In Plainfield

PLAINFIELD (CBS) -- A girl was rescued after she fell into a retention basin manhole during gym glass at Richard Ira Jones Middle School.

The girl, who officials believe was around 12-years-old, was running around 10 a.m. when she stepped onto the basin's metal grate and it collapsed.

The girl fell about 10 feet, landed in some water and broke a finger. She was pulled out around 10:30.

She was pulled out by rescue crews and was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center with no apparent injuries, according to a school spokesman.

The girl later went home and was doing fine, CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports.

The retention basin is on the edge of school property, near a bordering neighborhood of single family homes.

The basin, which is a few hundred yards away from a soccer field, is clearly visible and is set up above ground level by a ring of concrete.

The incident is under investigation.
