City Encouraging Small Businesses To Use Social Media

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It is "Social Media Week" in Chicago, and the Emanuel administration is encouraging small business owners to get with the programs.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Social Media Week is not just an excuse for a big party on Daley Plaza midday Friday. Mika Stambaugh, spokeswoman for the Department for Business Affairs and Consumer Protection says it is the time when officials remind small businesses to take advantage of things like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the rest.

"Technology is growing every day and it is important for business owners to grow with the technology because your online credibility increases, you reach more people, you are able to for a free fee get your message across," Stambaugh said.

Stambaugh admits younger, newer business people embrace the technology more.

"People have been in business for over ten years are a little more reluctant because they have had success if they have been in business ten years so they feel like, 'Well, I am doing ok without it.' We want them to understand that they will do even better with it," she said.

This month the city has been holding weekly workshops on various social media. It usually holds them quarterly.
