Lakeview Man To Run Chicago Marathon Barefoot

(CBS) -- A Chicago man will be running his first marathon this weekend and he's doing it in an unusual way, reports WBBM's Regine Schlesinger.

Like he does most things, 27-year-old Naftali Garber of Lakeview will be barefoot when he runs the 26.2-mile course in Sunday's Chicago Marathon.

"I've never found a pair of socks or shoes that don't make my feet too warm. So while you could say maybe one day, I'll find a pair of shoes that's comfortable, most likely, I will actually always find barefoot as the best way for my feet."

Garber says he knows other runners have done marathons barefoot so he doesn't expect any resistance from marathon officials on Sunday. But, he has run into problems elsewhere.

"There's the old saying 'No shoes, no shirts, no service.' That was started a long, long time ago....The bottom line is some people are just completely bewildered."

Garber isn't a total fanatic. During last winter's polar vortex days, he says, he did wear boots and he puts on skates when he's playing hockey. Otherwise, he says, he goes barefoot pretty much all the time. He says he occasionally cuts or scrapes his feet but, that he's never suffered any serious injuries.
