Police: Woman Passed Out Drunk Behind Wheel Wakes Up, Smashes Vehicle Into Squad Car

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Police say a woman who passed out drunk while driving in the west suburbs on Monday night woke up and smashed her vehicle into a squad car as officers tried to rouse her in Riverside.

At 8:39 p.m., officers were called to the 3400 block of South Harlem, where a woman was slumped behind the wheel of a 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser that was still running with the keys in the ignition, according to a statement from Riverside police.

Officers banged on the car's window but the woman, later identified as 46-year-old Sheri L. Seybold, had passed out with her foot on the brake and didn't wake up, police said.

As officers used a lockout tool to try to open the car door, Seybold allegedly woke up and slammed on the gas, smashing her car into a squad car in front of her.

One of the officers, "fearing that the car and driver were going to continue to flee and smash other cars," broke out the back passenger window, dove into the car, put it in park and pulled out the keys, according to police.

When police told her she had just slammed her car into a fully marked squad car, "she had no idea that the accident had taken place," according to the statement.

When she got out of the car, Seybold seemed "extremely confused and disoriented," and a plastic bag of cannabis fell from her lap, police said. She allegedly said she had been smoking "pot" and that she had had "two beers."

Seybold was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, improper parking, transportation of open alcohol and driving without insurance.

Court information for Seybold, of the 1000 block of Maplewood Lane in Bartlett, was not immediately available.
