Waukegan Teachers Strike To Continue Thursday
(CBS) -- A strike by Waukegan teachers will continue for a sixth say as the school district confirms schools will be closed again on Thursday.
The school district says both sides exchanged proposals and counter-proposals but could not reach an agreement Wednesday night. Waukegan Superintendent Donald Batiste says progress is being made in talks with striking teachers in a statement on the school district's website.
"We want all parents and the community to know that our negotiations team is working toward a fair resolution on behalf of all concerned. While we value the tremendous job our teachers do in the classroom, we also want our students back in school as much as you do," Batiste said in the statement.
The teachers union did not share the district's appraisal of the negotiations, believing that talks were still bogged down and progressing at a slow rate. Talks are set to resume at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Classes remain canceled at the district's 23 schools. District 60 has an enrollment of more than 17,000 students and employs 1,200 teachers.
