Elderly Woman Injured After Residential Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An elderly woman suffered minor injuries in a fire that gutted an apartment building on the 7600 block of South Ingleside this morning.

Five ambulances were sent to the scene.

The 72-year-old woman was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center with "minor" injuries, police said.

The building was extensively damaged.

Darren Griffith was upstairs in his apartment above the unit where the fire started. He said he got a whiff of smoke and then his apartment quickly filled with smoke.

He said he yelled to get everyone out and they all made it outside safely.

He said the injured woman was already in front of the burning building.
Residents were standing across the street, some in pajamas.

One man was shaking his head, saying over and over, "I lost everything."

That was the case for all of the residents.

The building was completely gutted. A woman was standing across the street in tears.

Her daughter and grandchildren, she said, "don't have nothing left." But, she said, "I'm just so glad they didn't burn up in there."

A resident said eight people lived in the building and all got out safely.

The fire spread to the building next door, and the owner used a garden hose to contain the fire until fire department arrived.
