McHenry Shooting Suspect Held On $1 Million Bail
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A McHenry County judge on Friday set bail at $1 million for a man facing attempted murder and other charges after he allegedly shot two sheriff's deputies early Thursday.
Also on Friday, divers were looking for the weapon used in the shooting near the Fox River in Holiday Hills.
Scott Peters, 52, who lives in Holiday Hills, was arrested late Thursday afternoon after a search that lasted nearly 16 hours.
The deputies were shot as they responded to a call of a domestic incident at Peters' home.
Peters was arrested near Route 176 and Smith Road in Crystal Lake after he was spotted by two passersby, who told police they saw a suspicious man walking out from a wooded area.
The two deputies are reported to be resting comfortably after undergoing surgery.
Peters apparently shot at the officers has they arrived at the residence, in the 1300 block of West Northeast Shore Drive, police said. Peters' wife and daughter were able to get out of the home safely.
A male sheriff's deputy, a seven-year veteran, underwent surgery at Condell Hospital in Libertyville after he was shot in the stomach and leg. The other officer is a woman who is a 12-year veteran of the McHenry County Sheriff's department. She was being treated at Centegra Hospital in McHenry after she was shot in the leg.
Peters was not armed when he was taken into custody.
McHenry County authorities say a rifle was recovered around noon Friday from a waterway; Thursday, officials recovered a bulletproof vest along with a military-style helmet.
Peters, who is charged with two counts each of first degree attempted murder, aggravated battery, and discharge of a firearm at a police officer, was armed with an AR-15 rifle.
At a hearing on Friday, prosecutors did not provide a motive for the incident.
