Chicago Treasurer Stephanie Neely Stepping Down For Job In Private Sector

(CBS) -- Chicago City Treasurer Stephanie Neely confirms that she's leaving her job for the private sector, and soon, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

Neely says she won't run for re-election and stepping down in a matter of weeks.

"My last day is going to be Nov. 30 and my new job starts Dec. 1 but I haven't announced where I am going just yet but I will be going back to the private sector," she said.

Neely came from the private sector to take the treasurer's job and doesn't deny the pay is better but says that is not necessarily why she is leaving.

"I think public service is very honorable," Neely said. "You're in a fish bowl, it takes up a lot of time. Financial reward will be great in the private sector, sort of having my life back will be great."

As for accomplishments, she says she is most proud of having brought financial literacy lessons to more than a quarter million Chicago public school children.

Neely has served at city treasurer for eight years.
