Trestman: We Put Our Defense In 'Bad Place'

(CBS) Though there's plenty of blame to go around for the Bears' 3-4 start after a 27-14 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, Chicago coach Marc Trestman is tracing the struggles largely to an offense that had big expectations and is scoring at a rate below league average.

"The biggest thing was our inability to convert on third down early," Trestman said in his Monday morning interview with WBBM 780. "We have opportunities, and we just didn't put it together on three third-down situations where we had a chance to continue drives. We had a couple negative plays on first down, which put us in second-and-long and made it hard to recover.

"We got to convert on third down. We didn't do that early. It put our defense in a bad place, left them on the field far too long."

The Bears were 5-of-12 on third-down conversions in the game.

"Our fans were terribly disappointed in our performance overall," Trestman said.
